Torres Strait Islander Parish Community
Torres Strait Islanders from around Brisbane have activities centred on Trinity at Fortitude Valley. Gathering from different parts of Brisbane, the TSI people have a self-governing council and community meetings to look after special events and commemorations.
The TSI Parish Community sponsors and conducts each year that unique TSI festival called the "Coming of the Light". This involves hundreds of people and is celebrated in the traditional ways which includes tribal re-enactments, feasting, singing and dancing centred around a mass which has traditional language hymns and songs.
The TSI Parish gathers for worship and friendship and community focus. The Parish Community also involves itself in Mabo celebrations, an annual land rights commemoration of the first grant of native title over his island in the Torres Strait to the late Eddie Mabo.
